How to Show Yourself Grace Today and Every Day
Life can be overwhelming. When you’re busy balancing your work life with your family life, home life, social life and even sex life, sometimes things will slip through the cracks. In those moments, it’s so important to show yourself grace and give yourself permission to fail -- but it’s easier said than done. As women, we tend to be our own worst critics and set impossible expectations for ourselves. But no one is perfect. When we are kind to ourselves and accept our imperfections, we’re more likely to show that same grace to others.
Self care and self compassion are practices that take time to develop. So today, we’re sharing five ways that you can show yourself grace in your toughest moments.
Speak kindly to yourself.
Despite knowing how unhealthy it is, everyone engages in negative self talk from time to time. So it’s time to break the cycle. Whenever you feel tempted to engage in self critical talk, show yourself grace and engage in productive self reflection. Take time to think about the situation you’re in, why things went wrong and what you can do next time to make an improvement. With daily practice, you’ll notice a positive shift in your mindset. And if you find yourself struggling to speak kindly to yourself, just imagine that you’re speaking to a close friend or family member. Ask yourself “Is this something I would say to someone I love?”
Don’t compare yourself to others.
We hear this advice all the time, but it may be the hardest lesson to learn. Comparison truly is the thief of joy -- it can trigger feelings of self doubt, envy or dissatisfaction. And when we compare ourselves to others, we often forget our own blessings. Instead of making negative comparisons (i.e. “Her life is so much better than mine”, “I’m a failure compared to her”, etc.), show gratitude for things that go right in your life.
Allow yourself to rest.
We’re often taught that successful people work the hardest. But while hard work is important, it’s even more important not to overwork yourself. Stress and ineffective sleep can have serious impacts on your mental and physical well-being. So be kind to your body and allow yourself to rest. Whether you take a break for an hour, a day or a week, your mind and body will thank you. Remember, there’s nothing glamorous about burnout.
Show gratitude.
Another way to show grace to yourself is to express gratitude for the good things in your life. Think about what makes you happy and what you’re thankful for, then write it down in a gratitude journal. Or come up with a gratitude mantra and write it on a sticky note to keep on your desk or your bathroom mirror. Whenever you need a reminder to focus on the good, go back and read those expressions of gratitude to ground yourself again.
Celebrate yourself.
This is perhaps the most important way to show grace. We’re all guilty of focusing on our failures more than our successes. But it’s time to start celebrating yourself. Acknowledge when you’ve done something well, and celebrate your actions instead of getting caught up in what you did or didn’t achieve. Be kind to yourself, and look for joy in the little moments.
