National Pet Day - April 11th

National Pet Day Is This Weekend

Here's what you can get your furry friend!

April 11th is a day to remember...National Pet Day. It’s a day to celebrate your furry friend, and we have the perfect gift to make their day all the more special.

Whether you’re a cat mom, dog dad, or any type of pet parent, we know how much joy your little buddy can bring.

They are probably showered with belly rubs, tug-of-war, and walks in the park most days of the year, but there is something else that can help boost their happiness and wellbeing…

CBD.

Yes, you heard that right. Because your pet has an endocannabinoid system (ECS), it too can benefit from CBD.

What is CBD?

So, what exactly is CBD? To put it simply, CBD is one of over 100 cannabinoids (chemical compounds) found in the cannabis Sativa family.

The majority of CBD you see on the market today is derived from the hemp plant, which also guarantees that there is only up to 0.3% THC—the psychoactive compound most-known for the high feeling it gives you when consumed.

However, we don’t recommend giving your pet a CBD product that has even trace amounts of THC. That’s why our Pet CBD Oil Drops and CBD Oil Dog Chews both contain zero THC, so you can rest assured that your fur baby will feel fantastic, without any chances of psychoactivity.

How Does CBD Help Pets?

All living things (except insects) have an ECS. And when you have an ECS, your body will naturally produce endocannabinoids— a fancy word for neurotransmitters that bind to the cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) throughout your body.

So, when CBD is consumed, it essentially gives your ECS a little boost—thus putting your body back into balance by regulating important functions like sleep, mood, appetite, pain, and immune system response.

The Benefits of CBD for Pets

If you have a pet that suffers from anxiety or is more anxious under circumstances like fireworks, thunderstorms, or traveling, CBD may just be its new best friend.

The number one reason people use CBD is for anxiety, and for pets, it works just the same.

There is a current study that is being conducted by Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences to analyze the effects of CBD oil in dogs with epilepsy.

This is one of the first CBD studies to be done on dogs, and it is much past due. The fact of the matter is that 20-30% of dogs who receive standard therapy for epilepsy continue to have seizures—even with their antiepileptic drugs (AED).

Other benefits include:

  • Alleviating pain due to osteoarthritis
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Digestion problems
  • Nausea
  • Heart disease
  • Ear infections
  • Skin allergies
  • Seizures
  • Appetite
  • Noise phobias
  • Cancer

How Much CBD Should I Give My Pet?

Wondering how much CBD your pet needs?

Our top tip: Start low, go slow, and take note of their results.

As a starting dosage, it depends on three things:

  1. The weight of your pet
  2. The ailment you’re treating
  3. The potency of the CBD product

A safe bet in terms of dosage is 0.2 mg of CBD per pound. So, if your dog weighs 50 pounds, you’ll give him 10 mg of CBD. From there, simply observe how he’s feeling. If he’s one that normally hides under the bed during Fourth of July fireworks, and is sitting calmly beside you, then he probably took enough CBD. If he still seems anxious, then you may consider upping the dosage to 0.3 mg per pound next time.

Just be sure to stay aware of how he seems to be feeling from the time he takes it to about four hours later.

Tip: If you’re using CBD oil, simply drizzle the recommended amount on their food, their favorite treat, or directly in their mouth.

Are There Any Side Effects I Should Know About?

There is definitely more research to be done on the health benefits that CBD has to offer our furry friends. What we can do in the meantime is go off of the mild side effects that humans may experience with the use of CBD…

Although very rare, there are 5 potential side effects to be on the lookout for:

  • Excessive panting
  • Lethargy
  • Soft stool
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of balance

These are all signs that your pet may have had too much CBD. If this is the case, simply lower their dosage.

The Bottom Line

Although much more research is needed on this topic, we have seen very positive results in the pets who use CBD.

If you and your pet are looking for a natural remedy with few, if any, side effects, our CBD Oil or CBD Treats will be at the top of your list.
